NUREMBERG JEWS AND "SOUNDS OF HEALING"
The following is the information about the program called "Sounds of Healing" and it centers around the performance of Leonard Bernstein's Symphony #3, the "Kaddish" Symphony. This concert will take place as part of Nuremberg Symphony's fall concert season on November 25th and 26th of this year. Joining with the orchestra will be over 200 singers from the US, Canada and Israel, both Jews and non-Jews, who will come together to sing "Kaddish" in the Meistersingerhalle which, as you may know, is built on the ruins of the Luitpold arena, adjacent to the Zeppelin fields and the Congresshalle. There will also be a preview performance on November 13th in Los Angeles (with a local orchestra), prior to leaving for Germany.
The impetus for the project is the relationship Nick Strimple, the director of the Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale (one of America's premier Jewish choral groups), has with the director of the Nuremberg Symphony, Gunter Einhaus. Mr. Einhaus has just retired after many years of service in Nuremberg, and over 15 years ago he first floated the idea of performing the Kaddish Symphony to Nick. That dream will finally be realized this November. The November date also marks the 10th anniversary of Bernstein's death as well as (it's hoped) the dedication of the new Nuremberg museum dedicated to remembering the Nazi Era. The City of Nuremberg has also made this performance the crowning cultural event of this year's 950th anniversary celebrations. We also have the enthusiastic support of Mr. Arno Hamburger and the Jewish community of the city.
We are also producing a television program which will bring the story of Nuremberg's role in the Holocaust, the story of its Jewish community before and after the War and the performance of this Kaddish Symphony, to a worldwide audience.
I regret that we have neglected to fully involve the Second/Third generation Group until this point. But, I hope we can now fully inform and involve you in our efforts, and perhaps have some of you join us this fall. We certainly need to speak with regarding participating in the televison documentary.
